#WCW: REBECCA MINKOFFMay 20, 2015 5:58 am
Our #WCW this week is Rebecca Minkoff, a friend and talented designer of an eponymous line of apparel and accessories for the tech-savvy downtown romantic. Her rapidly growing company, which can be seen on fashion-forward celebs like Beyonce, Zosia Mamet and The Man Repeller, has proven to be here to stay.
Rebecca isn’t all business though—as a mom of two she prioritizes her health by making time for a daily workout, she epitomizes the HBFit Lifestyle. We admire the way she balances her expanding company, her family and herself, while getting 8 hours of sleep a night! We hit up Rebecca to find out how she manages to do it all:
How did you get your start in fashion? It’s funny, when I was younger I always wanted to be a dancer—I loved it so much. Sadly my height didn’t really agree with this habit. My first memory of fashion and designing was when I was getting ready for my Bat Mitzvah. I really wanted a beautiful blue dress that I saw at the mall. When I told my mom I wanted that dress for my party, instead of buying it, she bought me my first sewing machine and fabric. That day, I made my first dress! It wasn’t perfect, but it was all mine. A few years later after developing an affinity for design in high school, I moved to New York City to pursue my dream of becoming a fashion designer; and the rest is history!
How did New York City affect your brand? The streets of New York have always been one of my favorite places to draw inspiration from. The streets ooze inspiration from the people, to the graffiti on the walls. Everyone has a unique dressing sensibility and it always inspires me to try something new when designing. NYC has had such a strong influence on the brand since the very beginning. My first bag as well as my ‘I love NY’ t-shirt were both inspired by NYC—this city helped me launch my career and continues to inspire me daily. New York City, specifically Lincoln center, is where I held my first Runway show. After all the hard work, being able to show my collection in NYC was an enormous achievement for the brand and myself. I am so proud to call New York City home.
What has been the biggest challenge since founding your company? When I first founded the company, I considered dropping my goal as a designer and working at a restaurant full time. Luckily, my brother saw to it that that didn’t happen. He stepped in and is now CEO of our company.
What role does social media pay in fashion? The better question is: what role doesn’t it play? From #OOTD posts to branded hashtags at runway shows, in ad campaigns, and on celebrities—social media has essentially become a documentary platform for the fashion industry and a tool for selling products. Whether you’re a designer, an editor or a consumer, social media has created a new language for fashion that is incredibly influential from both a business and artistic standpoint.
Do you take technology into account when you design? Yes definitely—technology is a very important tool that I use on a day-to-day basis to gather feedback/insight from my audience. The use of technology helps me understand what they like and don’t like, what’s working and what’s not, which in turn helps me make design decisions.
What piece do you feel best represents Rebecca Minkoff’s style and why? The leather moto jacket. It is effortless, versatile and exudes confidence, which is everything the Rebecca Woman embodies.
Who is the Rebecca Minkoff girl? She is a fashion-forward, modern woman who travels around the world. With ready-to-wear, handbags, footwear, jewelry, eyewear, and tech accessories, my unique vision for the brand is singularly focused on my ideal millennial girl, who experiences all of life’s exciting moments, with her confident, go-anywhere, do-anything attitude.
When are you introducing active wear? We will be introducing our Athleisure line this coming July.
How has expansion to Asia affected your brand? Asia is an incredibly important market for us—we are in in Korea, Hong Kong and Japan now which is thrilling. I just opened up my first free-standing store in Hong Kong, one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s exciting to be directly in touch with our long-time friends and loyal fans—it’s an honor to feel such enthusiasm towards my brand.
What’s next for Rebecca Minkoff? We have a lot of exciting things coming up. We will be opening two more retail stores—one in LA, and one in Chicago—and we are in the process of scoping out other locations to break ground. So stay tuned for new locations near you!
What are your 5 wardrobe essentials? My go-to wardrobe essentials are a classic leather jacket, layers of jewelry, a great pair of black skinny jeans, a plain white t-shirt and a great handbag (big enough to hold all my mommy-essentials!)
What is your beauty routine? 8 hours of sleep and lots of water!
What are your daily rituals? (I.E. meditation, working out, etc.) I love a morning workout—it is a time I try to always carve out for myself that helps me find peace and focus before a busy day ahead.
What does Health Beauty Fit mean to you? It means a lifestyle worth living. I think it’s so important to prioritize your health, which inevitably leads to inner and outer beauty. My health is so important to me because it makes me stronger, and as result, a great role model for my family, which is the most important thing in my life.
