Finding the Right Balance
The standard recommendation is eight glasses per day. Some say drink one gallon a day, while others advise to divide your body weight by two and the total, in ounces, is the amount you should drink daily. The verdict, though, is to listen to and respect your body. If you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.
When you’re starting your journey into drinking more water, go slow and steady at first and your body will adjust. Spread out your intake of water so it has time to flow through your body. This will also limit your visits to the washroom. You actually shouldn’t drink more than one liter per hour; otherwise, you might experience overhydration.
Yes, you can actually drink too much water. Overhydration, although rare, happens when your intake of water is too great and your kidneys can’t process this overflow and/or can’t get rid of the excess water. If left untreated, overhydration can cause seizures, unconsciousness and even comas.
