How to Achieve that Perfect Matte Look with Drugstore Lipstick

matte

Some matte-lovers express frustration at the dryness factor — you apply your lipstick as perfectly as can be, and ten minutes later you find your lips to be too dry, or even worse, appear to be cracking! While your intention was to achieve the perfect matte look, in a couple of minutes, you feel like you’ve totally ruined it. Not to worry, this guide will give you all the right tips to properly apply matte lipstick, and we’ve even thrown in some of our favorite lipsticks (that can be found at most drugstores) into the mix.

THE ESSENTIAL KNOW-HOWS

First decide on which kind of matte lip product is the right for you. You can choose from lipstick, lip stain, lip gloss that dries to a stain, or a lip pencil. While these lip products can all look fabulous if applied the right way, consider which kind of product might be easiest to apply according to your lip shape. Smaller lips might do better with a smaller and finer applicator such as a lip pencil, while fuller and naturally plumper lips could do with a gloss.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, EXFOLIATE. We can’t say this enough. This crucial step is often overlooked by matte lovers, but it can be the difference between a gorgeous plumpy matte look and a dry runny flakey lip. Ideally, you should exfoliate the night before you go to bed. You should also put on some lip balm to keep your soft lips hydrated.

MOISTURE IS BAD. The day of, blot away any moisture you might have on your kips. Having lip balm residue on your lips from the night before can make the lip product not transfer on your lips properly.

Concealer is your best friend. Add a line of concealer around the lips before you apply your matte lip product so the color POPS, for full effect. Keep a few Q-tips with you if you decide to wear matte lipstick as well if you need to clean up imperfections or flows. Trust us — you’ll thank us for being so prepared when you find you didn’t apply your concealer properly or your lipstick is running later on.

Don’t rub. As much as possible, avoid rubbing your pretty lips together, because the lipstick will fade or crack. If you want to even out the lip product, use a lip brush instead so the product is spread out evenly.

Round two? If you want to apply a second coat afterwards, or even later in the day or evening, remember to blot your lips with a tissue first. Your lipstick will last much longer, and blotting your lips will help you to avoid cakey looking lips.

Three long-lasting lip looks you can pick up at the drugstore:

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Matte Lipstick — Applies like a gloss but dries an opaque matte. It plumps and fills lips.

MAC Lipstick — This classic matte lipstick comes in a wide range of eye-catching shade; you’ll need to only apply one coat to get the sexy matte look.

Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color — Between its velvety texture and the oh-so-sweet price point, it’s not wonder this lipstick is a go-to.
