For this week’s What She Eats feature, we met up with Candice Miller, one of the amazing sisters behind Mama & Tata, an insider’s guide for moms in NYC. Candice is the “mama” behind the blog, and aside from being a multi-tasking mom, she’s also a fashion buyer, a learning specialist, and a health enthusiast. We were dying to know how Candice stays healthy and balanced as a mom on the go, so we sat down with her and asked her what a typical day of eating looks like for her. Here’s what she told us:
I wake up early with the kids, and after school drop-off, I hit the Tracy Anderson studio for a 1.5 hour workout where I drink water exclusively. I typically feel ill if I eat prior to working out. As soon as I am finished with my dance cardio and attain definition classes I grab a green juice with spinach, ginger, apple, lemon, celery, and turmeric.
I stopped drinking coffee years ago, and cut out most caffeine, but recently I’ve been really loving a matcha coconut latte at Cha Cha Matcha. They also have the best chia seed pudding, with coconut milk, berries, and cacao nibs. It’s my favorite breakfast. If for some reason I cannot get there, I have gluten free oatmeal with berries and coconut flakes at home. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I steer clear of dairy, coffee, and gluten as my body performs better without them.
Lunch is always on the go because I’m typically busy working. I love a homemade salad, with lots of greens, beets, avocado, grapes, cranberries, lemon, olive oil, pink sea salt. I add chicken, tuna fish, or tofu depending on my mood, but always have a protein to keep me full. I’m typically multi-tasking during this meal, and catching up on Mama & Tata emails. It’s efficient, but not the most glamorous meal of the day. If I’m home, I add an extra snack to lunch, since the girls usually eat delicious white fish or turkey burgers, and they love to share!
I actually love snacking on vegetables. I love all kinds. My go-to snacks are homemade beet chips and kale chips. I add some olive oil and sea salt, and make them extra crispy in the oven. I could eat these all day. They are the perfect answer to pretzel and potato chip cravings.
For dinner, I typically start with a soup or salad. I am a big soup fan. My favorites are white bean, lentil, and split pea. I add a bit of flaxseed to whichever soup I choose, because it helps with digestion.
For a main course I eat white fish, typically Branzino or Dover Sole drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper, and a side of sautéed spinach or artichokes with spicy red pepper flakes. I always end with a bowl of berries or pomegranate seeds. I love a clean dinner and I prefer to eat early. I find that eating early makes me sleep better and hence feel more energized in the mornings. Water is the only drink I have consistently throughout the day, and it makes a huge difference in my skin. I feel so much better when I drink enough water throughout the day!
