Blogging from NYC to LA: Q&A with Lee Tilghman

Here at HBFIT, we love keeping up with fun bloggers and health nuts who are just as passionate about real food as we are. We recently met up with Lee Tilghman, founder of her blog Lee From America, and we got to ask her some details about her background in the food industry and her journey from her working life in NYC to her blogger life in LA. Check out what she told us:

We think it’s awesome that you come from a long line of chefs and we’d love to hear more about your background. How did you get into cooking?

I got into cooking because my dad was an amazing cook. He’d come home from work and go straight into the kitchen to cook up a storm. I always admired how he sourced ingredients from only the best places. He had a spice guy, a cheese guy, a meat guy, and a cilantro guy. He’d travel for hours around the New York area looking for the most quality ingredients for his family. He really appreciates quality ingredients and the “less is more” philosophy. He’s still the best cook I know.

How has food and cooking changed who you are as a person?

Food and cooking has made me realize the importance of self-care and has also been a major creative outlet for me. When I get hit with a wave of inspiration, I just have to go with it. I’m the calmest and most authentically myself when I’m cooking.

You made a pretty big move from NYC to LA. What made you decide to leave your full-time job in New York to working for yourself in California?

I moved to California in February 2015 because my gut was telling me to do it. it was so scary leaving all of my friends and safety and comfort of NYC living. I was close to my family and all my roots and foundation, and I knew I had to lift myself up and out of that in order to get out of my comfort zone and grow. I had a vision for myself, and that included moving to Cali and working for myself. I knew California was where I would belong and thrive. I knew this because at my old job I came out to LA a lot and always loved it here. I saw a food scene here unlike anything I had experienced. Plus- the weather.I have seasonal depression and I needed that sun!

What’s one thing you miss about NYC?

The walkability. Everything is so close. In LA you need a car. I miss not driving!

Have you always been a healthy eater? Who is someone who has inspired your eating or cooking habits?

Yes! I’ve been eating healthy since I was sixteen years old. From a young age I was very aware of what I put into my body. My mother definitely inspired me to be healthy and have balance. She will eat a big salad before her main entree with protein, fat and carbs each night. Then, she has a scoop of ice cream every night before bed. She allows herself to eat what she craves and leads an active lifestyle. She really gets the most out of life.

What’s your healthy living philosophy?

Self care first, everything else second. I have made a career out of listening to my body, my gut, and my intuition, and that has never led me astray.

What made you start your blog Lee From America? Did you have any fears going into it?

I started it because I was getting a feature with Free People and they actually advised me to get a website up and running before it came out, and boy was I glad I did! (before that I just had a @leefromamerica Instagram.)  I did have some fears. I was scared of being vulnerable and putting myself out there, but I knew I had nothing to lose. I had a voice and something to share.

What’s the one thing you love most about the blogger community?

I have made some of my closest friends via blogging. I love how supportive the community is. I love how caring everyone is. we all support and check up with each other. no matter where we are in the world.

Your business seems mostly social media-based. Do you ever have days where you just don’t feel like posting? How do you deal with that?

Yeah, I definitely do! On those days, I either gather up the strength and energy to post (it is a business, after all) or, I just don’t post if I am really not feeling it!

What’s one ingredient you’re loving right now?
