Studio Spotlight: LEKFit

For this May’s Studio Spotlight, we’ve decided to venture out of the NYC fitness scene to check out a studio in LA that’s got the whole town buzzing. Created by former dancer and choreographer Lauren Kleban, LEKFit is a dance-inspired fitness studio that uses high intensity cardio bursts and sculpting techniques to give you a heart-pumping, fat burning, super fun workout. We caught up with Lauren, who gave us all the details on the LEKFit method and what to expect from a class. She also told us that the first 10 HBFIT readers to use the code HBFITLEKFIT_10 can get 10 percent off your first month of LEKFit streaming!

We’d love to hear a bit about your background. How did you come up with the idea for LEKFit?

Starting LEKfit was a very organic experience. I had been a professional dancer and dance fitness instructor at various gyms and boutique studios prior to having my first child four years ago. While working at multiple fitness studios, I saw the need for a more efficient and effective dance inspired workout.

Can you explain the LEKfit method to someone who has never heard of it before?

LEKfit is a dance inspired fitness method designed to create long and lean muscles by using intervals of low impact, high intensity, fat burning cardio with muscle sculpting techniques created to strengthen and tone. The LEKfit method features workouts that are musically driven, super fun, challenging and effective, but not to be confused with other dance-inspired workouts. Clients are not forced to remember dance sequences but rather move their bodies in a correct way that feels good and gets their heart rate up. Our cardio and strength interval classes are often done on mini trampolines and our sculpt class is unique combination of ballet and yoga.

We love that the LEKfit method uses dance inspired cardio while incorporating high intensity intervals with strength and toning movements. Can you explain what makes this combination so effective?

When I created the LEKfit method, it was after years of working at numerous boutique studios and gyms where I saw a need for a more efficient and effective workout. Combining cardio with strength training gives you everything you need in less time. Also, you’re forced to stay present and incapable of getting bored because you don’t know what’s coming next.
You guys offer a variety of classes, such as Bounce, Sculpt fit, and Fusion fit. Can you explain the difference?

BOUNCE is our signature high intensity interval cardio and circuit workout. Every BOUNCE class includes a warm up, LOW IMPACT high intensity cardio session using mini JumpSport trampolines, active stretching, leg, arm and core series plus a cool-down. The FUSION class is the same except we eliminate the rebounders. I want clients to experience the workout two ways so when they are traveling, they know how to do the workout with limited equipment via LEKfit ON DEMAND. The SCULPT class is our ballet and yoga inspired mat workout designed to create long and lean muscles. Every SCULPT class includes a warm up, leg, arm and core series plus extended stretching and foam rolling for optimal muscle recovery. SCULPT is the perfect compliment to BOUNCE and FUSION.

What are three current songs someone can expect to be pumping in a LEKfit class?

Kill The Lights (with Nile Rodgers) by Alex Newell, Jess Glynne, DJ Cassidy
Rockin’ by The Weekend
Skipping Stones by Gallant (feat. Jhené Aiko)

How do you want someone to feel after a LEKfit class?
Ready to take on their day! Your workout shouldn’t deplete you, it should leave you feeling energized, elevated, refreshed and renewed. I strive to make LEKfit classes a MIND, BODY and SOUL experience and LOVE seeing everyone leave drenched in sweat with a smile on their face.

We love that you opened the studio yourself and you teach the classes. What’s your favorite part about teaching?

When I see a woman connect with her body and fall in love with it.

Do you need any dance experience before taking a LEKfit class? What advice would you give to a beginner who isn’t “good at dancing”?
No! Not at al! This isn’t “dance cardio,” this is just a workout created by a dancer to help you achieve your healthiest self. You DO NOT have to be “good at dancing,” you just have to be willing to let go, get sweaty and have fun with us.

This month at HBFIT we’re focusing on being present. How is this concept incorporated into LEKfit?
I love this! It is so easy to get caught up in the stress of working out: how to workout, when and where, what to eat before, what to eat after, results, comparisons, numbers on the scale…I mean the list goes one and it’s so upsetting to watch woman stress over it! I preach to my clients that must find a workout they can enjoy, commit to it, allow yourself the hour to take care of you, let go and get sweaty.
