Work & Play: Jayma Cardoso

Hey HBFIT fam, we would like to introduce you to the amazing Jayma Cardoso, the latest babe in our Work & Play series, and owner of the famous Hamptons summer spot, The Surf Lodge. She started her career partnering on NYC nightclubs such as Lavo and Goldbar, which inspired her to open a place of her own in Montauk.  With her recent opening, a nightclub called Mailroom located in lower Manhattan, we asked this busy mama and entrepreneur to tell us how she stays balanced with all of the late nights and early mornings, and get the inside scoop on her wellness routine.

Tell us a little about what you do:

I create experiences for my guests. I am currently focusing on hotels, but hotels for me is not hospitality, instead it’s focusing on all aspects of a stay such as food, accommodations, design, music, wellness and art.

The HBFIT team are huge fans of the Surf Lodge. Tell us, what’s the story behind it?

I fell in love with hospitality while I was in college, and quickly started and partnered with Cain, GoldBar and Lavo. Although I love nightlife, I knew there was something missing in the market and I wanted to create an all day experience, which is when I founded The Surf Lodge: a hotel, restaurant, hang out spot and finally a nightlife destination.

What’s your wellness and self-care philosophy? How do you approach it daily and how do you incorporate it into work?

Working in nightlife, it means long nights and early mornings. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized the importance of self-care and taking time out of your day every day to focus on yourself. I now make sure to workout every day and give back to my body. My favorite workouts are The Bari Studio which we hosted out in Montauk this summer, or some light and relaxing yoga. I also practice transcendental meditation. Although I’m not always able to get two 20 minutes meditation sessions in, I always always always get the morning one in right after I wake up. Now, it’s become a ritual like brushing my teeth.

What’s a day in the life like?

Everyday is different, ESPECIALLY when you’re a mom. But I try and wake up every morning at 6:30am, meditate, and then take my son out to the beach to watch the surfers. I’ll bring some breakfast to eat there and have some time just him and I. At around 9-10am, I’ll make it back home to work. I spend all between The Surf Lodge and home working, until finally around 7pm I make it home to have dinner as a family. Family is everything in my house and eating dinner together is tradition. Weekends are the most demanding since instinctively, I’m a host, so I spend all night making sure my guests are having the most fun they could be.

What are your go-to beauty and wellness products right now?

I strongly believe that beauty starts from within so nutrition and what I put into my body is half of my beauty routine. I always try and eat a lot of plants and leafy greens to stay hydrated. I start my mornings off with Sakara Life’s Beauty Water to give me an extra hydration boost. As for products, I love Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir and Tata Harper’s Regenerating Cleanser. I keep my beauty products as natural and simple as possible.

Ideal summer night?

First, dinner at home with my family. Once I put my son down for bed, its time for work. You will find me at The Surf Lodge or my new spot The Mailroom.
